Giving Good Gifts

I’ve been thinking about this gift-giving season. We hustle around to find good gifts for the ones we love to celebrate the season. If you’re like me, you stay up until the wee hours of night on Cyber Monday and do it all from the couch, but some of you—I’m sure—still hustle around.

For my family, the tradition of giving good gifts is in honor of the greatest gift of all time. God’s gift to mankind is His Son, Jesus, our salvation through forgiveness. So I thought about the gifts that I will give.

This isn’t a post about how meaningless and superficial gift giving is because I love and cherish giving and receiving sweet gifts. But I did give pause to the meaning of the word gifts recently. Gifts are not only the tangible presents we open on Christmas morning, but our gifts are our talents. We are all gifted with unique and wonderful talents!

Gifts are not only the tangible presents we open on Christmas morning, but our gifts are our talents.

I want to shower my beloveds with not only packages they can unwrap, but I want to share my talents with them. And by doing that, I think I am gifting my Savior, as well. By using the talents He has given me to spread love, I’m honoring His blessing to me.

What are your talents? How are you gifted? Musical talent? Athletic ability? Technologically savvy? Interior design? Graphic design? The gift of mercy? Service? Encouragement? Baking?

We all have talents. How can you give of your talents to others this holiday season?

I believe I’ve been given a gift for words. This Christmas, I am going to write something for my husband and each of my kids. Maybe to others, as well. And I’ll journal to God as my gift to Him.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 NIV

Can you give good gifts? Plan a special meal for each family member one day per month? Sing them each a song? Create something for them? Fix something that is broken? Take a special photograph for them? Offer a kind word individually? Do some heavy lifting?

I’d love to hear your ideas for how we can give good gifts with our talents this year.
